On Saturday, Ewen Costiou took 9th place in the first stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, contested between Contes and Gourdon (162.4km). Edoardo Zamperini, who was part of the day's breakaway, was voted race winner.

On Saturday, during the first stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, Alessandro Verre was involved in a crash after 80 km of racing and was forced to retire. He was taken to hospital in Antibes, where he underwent tests and suffered a contusion to his left knee, but no fracture.

On this first stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, the objective of the ARKEA-B&B HOTELS team was to place one or two riders in the day's breakaway. I managed to get on the right bandwagon at the start of the race. The peloton, led by EF Education - Easypost, Bahrain Victorious and XDS Astana Team, gave us a lead of up to 1'30. In the final, when the peloton came back on us, I tried to stay at the front to help Ewen Costiou, who was our leader. In the final kilometres, the whole team worked hard with Thibault Guernalec, Simon Guglielmi and Martin Tjøtta to put Ewen in the best possible position. He finished 9th. It's a good first stage for the team. On Sunday, there are still some great things to come.

The ARKEA -B&B HOTELS team wanted to be in the race and in the breakaway right from the start to show that it had an intention on this first stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes. This was the case with Edoardo Zamperini. He seized the right opportunity. The breakaway went a long way. Once it was caught, EF Education - Easypost made the race harder. Once again, we were able to count on the work of Edoardo Zamperini as well as Thibault Guernalec, Simon Guglielmi and Martin Tjøtta around Ewen Costiou. And that was important. When it came down to the pedals in the final, there wasn't much missing for Ewen to stay in contact with the first group. He was dropped but came back on his own. The energy he expended to catch up then cost him in the sprint, but he showed that he was no less strong than the other riders coming in for 4th place. On Sunday, on the final stage, I think it's going to be an open race and the general classification could change.
